Boone Through a Local’s Eye: Jessica Maceda
Hey there, I’m Jess—photographer, Wayfaring Wanderer, and the gal behind Best of Boone. After 20 years of calling this mountain town home, I’ve fallen hard for its cozy corners, creative community, and the kind of beauty that sneaks up on you when you're least expecting it.
Whether you’re a visitor looking for a feel-good itinerary or a local searching for a few fresh ideas, these are some of the places I keep coming back to. No algorithms. No hype. Just tried-and-true favorites from my everyday adventures.
🍔 Burgers & Cocktails at The Cardinal
This funky little joint is one of my top picks for a laid-back night out. Their locally sourced burgers (with plenty of fun and wild topping options) are crave-worthy, and their cocktail game? Always strong. Bonus points for their quirky decor and chill vibe.
🌿 Greenway Trail Wanders
Right near my house and smack in the middle of town, the Boone Greenway Trail is a quiet escape I return to often. Whether I’m walking off lunch or just taking a moment to breathe between editing marathons, it’s my go-to spot to reconnect with nature.
🥗 Lunch with Heart at Wildwood Community Market or F.A.R.M. Cafe
Whether I’m feeling something fresh and nourishing or in the mood for a community-powered meal, these two are my lunchtime staples. Wildwood is bright, modern, and always delicious, while F.A.R.M. Cafe lets you pay what you can—and enjoy a warm, made-from-scratch meal in the process.
💧 Wellness Reset at Care Collective
When life feels full or fast-paced, Care Collective offers a peaceful place to slow down. Their traditional sauna and cold rinse setup is designed to help you reset—physically, mentally, and emotionally. It’s a grounding ritual that locals turn to for balance, clarity, and a fresh start, no matter the season.
🎨 Art Breaks at the Turchin Center
Whenever I need a little inspiration boost, the Turchin Center never lets me down. Their rotating exhibits are always thoughtful and creative, and while you're there, don’t miss the colorful outdoor staircase mural—it’s practically begging for a photo op.
🎶 Summer Sounds at the Jones House
On warm Friday nights, you’ll find me on the lawn at the Jones House, soaking up live music with a picnic blanket and good company. It’s one of my favorite community traditions and the perfect way to slide into the weekend.
🌅 Sunset Magic at Thunder Hill Overlook
I’ve chased a lot of sunsets, but Thunder Hill on the Blue Ridge Parkway still tops the list. It’s easily accessible, and the sky here? She always shows off. Bring snacks, a cozy layer, and someone you love.
🍪 Sweet Treat Stops at Blue Deer, Venture, or App Cookie Co
When I need something sweet, these are my go-tos. Fresh-baked cookies + creamy ice cream (at Blue Deer), rich and gooey chocolatey treats (from Venture), or classic bakes from App Cookie Co—no matter what you’re craving, these local sweet spots totally satisfy.
Boone isn’t just where I live—it’s where I feel most at home. And these places? They’re part of the rhythm of my day-to-day life here.
Stick around, explore a little deeper, and let Best of Boone be your guide to the good stuff—because this town is full of it.
